Olive Oil Experiment Results / Resultados Experimento Aceite de Oliva

I am now able to publish the results of my recent experiment using different quality olive oil in soap.  THANK YOU SO MUCH to the volunteers who tested these for me!!   There were 17 testers but in the end 2 of them provided no results so my experiment is based on the results from 15 testers.  Ahora puedo publicar los resultados de mi experimento reciente con diferentes calidades de aceite de oliva en jabón.  ¡¡MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS a los voluntarios que los probaron!!   Había 17 participantes pero al final 2 de ellos no me dieron resultados así que mi experimento se base en los resultados de 15 personas.

The Experiment – Basically I made 4 different non-scented soaps using 4 different qualities of Olive Oil and sent out testers to see which soap people preferred.  I wanted to know if people could actually tell the difference and if it was worth using organic extra virgin olive oil.  El Experimento – Básicamente hice 4 diferentes jabones sin aroma, utilizando 4 diferentes calidades de aceite de oliva y envié muestras para ver que jabón preferiría la gente.  Mi meta era saber si realmente la gente podía distinguir la diferencia y si valía la pena (y el dinero!) usar aceite de oliva extra virgen y ecológico en mis jabones.

 I am sure that the participants are eager to know which soap was made with which quality olive oil…  Estoy segura que los voluntarios quieren saber que jabón contenía que calidad de aceite…

Soap Number 1 / Jabón Nº 1 – Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Lubrin  Aceite de Oliva Extra Virgen de Lubrín

Soap Number 2 / Jabón Nº 2 – Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Lubrin  Aceite de Oliva Extra Virgen y Ecológico de Lubrín

Soap Number 3 / Jabón Nº 3 – Bottom of the Line Olive Oil from Lubrin  Aceite de Oliva de baja calidad de Lubrín

Soap Number 4 / Jabón Nº 4– Cheap Olive Oil from the local supermarket  Aceite de Oliva barata del supermercado

After analyzing the results I have some basic conclusions: 

Después de analizar los resultados, tengo algunos conclusiones básicas:

1)        The soap made with Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Lubrin has won, as I wanted it to, but interestingly, NOT by as much as I would have thought.  El jabón hecho con Aceite Extra Virgen y Ecologico de Lubrín ha ganado, como yo quería, pero se me hace muy interesante que no ganó por tanto como hubiera pensado.

40% of the participants chose this as soap as their favourite.  40% de los participantes eligieron este jabón como su preferido.

27% of the participants chose the bottom of the line Olive Oil soap as their favourite.  27% de los participantes eligieron el jabón con aceite de oliva de baja calidad como su preferido.

20% of the participants chose the Extra virgin olive oil soap as their favourite.  20% de los participantes eligieron el jabón con aceite de oliva extra virgen como su preferido.

13% of the participants chose the local supermarket olive oil soap as their favourite.  13% de los participantes eligieron el jabón con aceite de oliva del supermercado como su preferido.

2)     Everyone seems to like different types of soap.  I don’t think there is a right and wrong here.  For whatever reason, people seem to have very distinct preferences, maybe water quality, skin type, and simply personal preferences…  Parece que a todo el mundo, le gusta diferentes tipos de jabón.  No hay uno correcto y otro equivocado. La gente parece tener preferencias muy distintas, quizás por la calidad de su agua, el tipo de piel y simplemente preferencias personales…

Please keep in mind the following things about this experiment:  Por favor, toma en cuenta lo siguiente sobre este experiment:

-         This was very young soap.  It had only cured for 6 weeks when I sent it out.  Este jabón era muy joven.  Solamente había curado 6 semanas cuando los envié a los participantes.

-         This was not Castille soap.  This soap had about 60% Olive Oil, but it also had my other favourite soaping oils – Coconut, Castor and Shea Butter.  No era jabón de Castilla.  Este jabón tenía mas o menos 60% de aceite de olive  pero también tenía mis otros aceites preferidos para hacer jabón – Coco, Ricino y Manteca de Karité.

-         Although 40% of the participants chose the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil soap as their favourite, 20% chose it as their second favourite, 20% as their third favourite and 20% as their least favourite!!!!  Aunque 40% de los participantes eligieron el Aceite Extra Virgen y Ecológico como su preferido, 20% lo eligieron como su segundo preferido, 20% lo eligieron como su tercer preferido y ¡¡¡ 20% lo eligieron como su MENOS preferido!!!

-         One of the participants prefered the Organic Oil soap for her skin, but LOVED the rich Olive smell in the bottom quality oil soap.  I found it fascinating that she noticed this because the oil itself smells the strongest.  I love its smell but there are people who don’t.  A uno de los participantes le gusto el jabón de aceite ecológico para su piel, pero le ENCANTÓ el olor fuerte de aceitunas del jabón Nº 3, el del aceite de baja calidad.  Que interesante que lo notaba porque ese aceite mismo huele lo más fuerte.  A mi me encanta el olor pero hay gente que no le gusta.

These results leave the question out there – Why are we usually recommended to use bottom of the line olive oil in our soap making instead of top quality?  Colour?  Trace time?  Smell?  Price?   Estos resultados dejan abierta la pregunta – ¿Porque nos recomiendan normalmente usar aceite de oliva de baja calidad cuando elaboramos jabón en lugar de aceite de alta calidad?  ¿Color? ¿Tiempo para llegar a la traza?  ¿Aroma?  ¿Precio?

In the end, the experiment has served its purpose for me.  I have chosen which oil I am moving forward with.  From now on, I am using Organic Extra-Virgen Olive Oil in my products. I have not done colour experiments with this oil yet, so if it proves too dark for any of my natural colours to come through well, I may use a different quality oil simply to enhance the colour in that soap, but for the most part I am going with the Organic oil.  Al final, mi experimento ha servido su propósito.  He elegido que aceite voy a usar. . . Desde ahora en adelante, voy a usar Aceite de Oliva Extra-Virgen y Ecológico en mis productos.  Todavía no he hecho experimentos de color con este aceite asi que si afecta mucho los colorantes naturales, es posible que uso otra calidad de aceite simplemente para facilitar el color natural en ese jabón, pero sobre todo voy a usar el aceite ecológico.

Hand-Woven Baskets / Cestas de Esparto Hechas a Mano

I discovered these amazing hand-woven baskets, made by a remarkable artisan in Lubrin. He is 92 years old and lived in California for 22 years. He’s got so many wonderful stories...      Descubrí estas maravillosas cestas hechas a mano por un artesano muy interesante en Lubrín.  Tiene 92 años y vivió 22 años en California.  Cuenta tantos increíbles cuentos...

The baskets are made from Esparto Grass and sometimes he adds a little colour with telephone wires!    Las cestas están hechas de esparto y a veces incluye un poco de color con alambres de colores de telefónica!

I used to get baskets from the local cheap-shop… but it’s not about cheap is it?  It’s about feeling good about everything I do… about supporting local artisans… about preserving local and traditional crafts which could get lost with all these cheap-shops around...     Antes compraba cestas de las tiendas más baratas… pero no se trata de barato ¿verdad?  Se trata de sentirme bien de todo lo que hago… de apoyar los artesanos de esta zona… de conservar manualidades y arte que se podría perder totalmente con todas estas tiendas baratas...

I love these hand-crafted baskets which are now an integral part of my market stand.   Me encantan estas cestas artesanas que ahora son una parte fundemantal de mi puesto de mercadillo.

I want to clarify that these are not Castille soaps.  They each have about 60% Olive Oil (for the oil part) and they also contain Coconut Oil, Organic & Unrefined Shea Butter and Castor Oil.  Quiero clarificar que no son jabones de Castilla.  Todos tienen más o menos 60% Aceite de Oliva (para la parte de aceite) y también tienen Aceite de Coco, Manteca de Karité Ecológica, Sin Refinar y Aceite de Ricino.

In my own initial testing, first on my hands, I have found that all four left the tops of my hands quite soft but two left the palms of my hands drier than the other two.  So, I have eliminated those two from my further tests and will continue testing in the shower and on my face.  I have also found that one of the four used up quicker than the others.   My testing is not blind though, as I know which oil was used for which, so I am more interested in hearing about your results!!  He empezado mis propias pruebas, primero en las manos, y he encontrado que los cuatro dejan la parte arriba de mis manos bastante suave pero dos de los jabones dejan las palmas más secas que las otros dos.  Así que he eliminado esos dos de mis pruebas desde ahora y voy a seguir probando las dos que quedan en la ducha y en la cara.  También he notado que uno de los cuatro se termina más rápido que los otros.   Pero mis pruebas no son ciegas porque yo sé que jabón se hizo con que aceite así que serán más interesantes los resultados vuestros!

Olive Oil Soap Experiment - Want to help? Quieres Ayudar?

How do we know which Olive Oil is best in soap?  Would you like to help me find out?

¿Como sabemos que Aceite de Oliva produce el mejor jabón? ¿Quieres ayudarme determinarlo? 

Once I decided that I wanted to have the best possible local ingredients in my products, I began searching for the best local Olive Oil.  As I posted about earlier, I discovered a great Olive Oil mill in a nearby town called Lubrin. 

Una vez que decidí que quería usar los mejores ingredientes locales posibles para mis productos, empece buscar el mejor Aceite de Oliva local. como ya os conté en una entrada anterior, encontré una Almazara fabulosa en un pueblo cercano que se llama Lubrín.

I did an experiment – I made 4 different batches of soap using the same recipe except each with a different type of Olive Oil. The recipe is simple & non-scented.  The four different types of Olive Oil that I used are:

- the cheapest Olive Oil from the local grocery store

- Almazara de Lubrín Olive Oil, bottom quality

- Almazara de Lubrín Extra-Virgen Olive Oil

- Almazara de Lubrín Organic Extra-Virgen Olive Oil

All 4 batches were made at the same temperatures.  Two batches were made one morning and the other two batches the next morning, at the same time of the day, same climactic conditions.  I tried to keep every other variable the same. 

Hice un experimento - 4 diferentes jabones con la misma receta pero cada uno con un tipo de Aceite de Oliva distinto. La receta es sencilla y sin aroma añadida. Los 4 diferentes tipos de Aceites de Oliva son:

- el Aceite de Oliva más barato del supermercado más cerca

- Aceite de Oliva de la Almazara de Lubrín, calidad más baja

- Aceite de Oliva Extra-Virgen de la Almazara de Lubrín

- Aceite de Oliva Extra-Virgen y Organico de la Almazara de Lubrín

Cada una de estos jabones se elaboró a las mismas temperaturas. Dos se hicieron una mañana y dos la mañana siguiente, en el mismo momento del día y con las mismas condiciones climaticas. Intenté mantener todos los variables iguales.

For anyone who is interested in participating in the experiment, I have enough samples left to send to 12 people.  I will send you a sample of each of the different soaps. I would like you to try them out and report back on the qualities of each one if you noticed any differences.

I will reveal which number soap has which oil once I get all the results back.

Wild Lavender/ Lavanda Silvestre

Lavender is one of my favourite scents in the world... it has helped me sleep over the years and soothed and comforted me in moments when I needed it.  This wonderfully moisturizing bar is my comfort soap. 

Lavanda es uno de mis aromas preferidas en este mundo... me ha ayudado dormir en muchas ocasiones durante los años, y me ha aliviado y confortaba en momentos que lo necesitaba. Esta pastilla maravillosamente hidratante es mi jabón reconfortante. 

Almazara de Lubrín

This week, I had a wonderful visit to the Almazara (Olive Oil Mill) in Lubrin, one of the local villages. This is where the Olive Oil is produced that will be used from now on in Naturalmente Mediterraneo products.  I was very impressed!  Esta semana, hice una visita maravillosa a la Almazara en Lubrin, uno de los pueblos de esta zona. Allí se produce el aceite de oliva que se usará desde ahora en adelante en los productos de Naturalmente Mediterráneo.  ¡Impresionante la Almazara!





 

I brought home three types of olive oil, which I will be experimenting with: Lleve tres diferentes tipos de Aceite y voy a experimentar con ellos:

· Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Picual variety of Olives)  Aceite de Oliva Extra Virgen (Variedad Picual)

· Organic Extra Virgen Olive Oil (Olive varieties of Picual, Hojiblanca and Arbequina mixed)  Aceite de Oliva Ecologico Extra Virgen (Una mezcla de las variedades de Picual, Hojiblanca and Arbequina)

· Bottom of the line, bottom of the barrel Olive Oil. El aceite de baja calidad

I will be experimenting with the different types of oils to see/smell/feel the difference in the soaps.  I am already LOVING working with the Lubrin Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Something so rich and luxurious about it. . .  Voy a experimentar con las diferentes calidades de aceites para ver/ oler/ sentir la diferencia en los jabones. Ya me estoy encantando trabajar con el Aceite Extra Virgen de Lubrín.  Siente tan rico y lujoso. . .  

They also provided me with some olive pits bits which I will be using for exfoliation. . .  Look forward to experimenting!  También me dieron restos de huesos de aceituna que voy a usar para la exfoliación. ¡Tengo ganas de empezar con los experimentos!

Friday Morning Ingredients – Ingredientes de Viernes por la Mañana

Three Fridays ago my lovely friend Elisa took me to her family property nearby, and toured me around the area surrounding Los Giles (near Mojacar). I took lot of photos as we came across so many of the ingredients that I use! 

Un viernes, hace 3 semanas,  mi amiga Elisa me llevo al cortijo de su familia y me enseñó la zona, el campo y los pueblos alrededor de Los Giles (cerca de Mojacar).  Descubrimos muchos de los ingredientes que uso en los productos así que saque un montón de fotos.
